Another thing I did giving myself a challenge that I am not allowed to use the colors I can plainly see in front of me, because doing that, I would usually get pastel colors which is apparently a bad habit.

I want to hate myself for this, but this completely changed me to be better at colors.

However, I learned that low contrast isn't always bad. You need badly contrasting colors to be able to pull off dark colors e.g. horror settings. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with pastels if your mindset is stubbornly stuck at well-contrasting colors (e.g. your resulting palette will be extremely sparse with darks) and something will be missing if you attempt to mimic low lighting.

15 colors. Was a pain in the ass dealing with varying amounts of contrast with only 15 colors.

I would have not used this otherwise if I never got over a stupid nitpick that this is a very commonly used stock and that your art loses originality. Fuck that, I need to practice.

Yes pretty nice colours.

I think you can add the real size image, because the contrast is even more beautiful at 100% size

Love the way you made the contrasting colors work. Red - to blue - to black? I wouldn't have thought of that!

>I would usually get pastel colors which is apparently a bad habit.
Could you please elaborate on this? Do you mean this just for your pixel art style, or for art in general? If I'm usually going for kind-of-realistic digital painting, should I be concerned about my colors being pastel-ey?

I saw the habit of 'pastels' to be a very concerning problem for me as a pixel artist particularly because the things I do has significantly greater emphasis on being a well-rounded artist who can replicate other video game art styles. I am not in a field that has that much of an emphasis on 'finding your style' you could find within illustrators, though that's an outsider's opinion =)

The note about realistic digital painting is a fun thought though. While it is more 'realistic' to use the more pastel-colors you see in everyday life, even some photographers have to find creative ways to change the lighting as sometimes, the lighting you see in everyday life is too boring for what we require from a piece.

Oh, I'm listening to music on youtube and they recommended me this mix, which happens to use a photograph that has some pretty strong contrasts i.e. it uses black for shading

Warm and cold colours are always a win when used side by side. There is a teensy bit of eye burn, especially around left, arm-pit area. Looks sweet regardless!

I *could* push it even farther since the point was to go for over-the-top contrasts, but I couldn't get myself to pick colors that would clash that level of hard

Very well done, except for this slight critique: you made her butt look HUGE. It shouldn't be so rounded.

Well done. I need to do some more realistic studies like this myself, I think.

It's cool to hear about what you learned.

nicely dithered.
The times I've attempted pixel art, I could never get dithering right.

The colors on this came out really well! The tones are very rich, and the whole thing has a lot of depth.
