The thing in her mouth is a magic scepter which gives her various shooting powers for a side-scrolling shooter.
This probably looks kinda stupid, but it looks perfectly fine in the game when everything's moving so quickly so you won't have time to stop and notice any art mistakes. You're mainly going to be looking at enemies to shoot down but look at your character in only your peripheral vision.
Made for a game-making competition for individuals to make their game within 48 hours, creating all game assets and game logic by themselves. Out of 37 other games made for the contest, my entry got 4th place for fun, 1st place in graphics, but I scored a bit weakly in other categories so I got 5th place overall.
The body bases were made, then the wing, then the wing flapping was made into its own animation. The wings are its own separate layer in the game coding.
These sprites probably took about 2 hours to make. Could probably be faster if I was more familiar with pony proportions so there's less trial and error.

Heh, I thought it looked like a nose at first, then I thought it was supposed to be the underside of her pith helmet and I wondered why it was such a bright color.
